Mason cooper you are aware that there are very few N&W places left. People
complaining about this and that. I will be tickled to go back to strausburg
and see the only running N&W engine. Much of what makes a society
successful is being able to teach people who do come to a convention the
history or what was the history of the railroad every year the western
Maryland goes to Elkins we have a great time more fellowship and sharing of
stories of years gone by is what I hope to experience. ... Dean Taylor
To the list: Sounds like a repeat of the discussion prior to the NWHS
Convention held at Strasburg PA. I now live in Missouri,
which is well "off line" for the old N&W. But I'm considering Pikesville;
might be my last chance to go deep into the coal field.
I'm also a member of NMRA; recent article by Pres. Charlie Getz raised the
question of a "National" convention outside the USA.
Certainly off line for US modelers; but the reasoning is the same: a chance
to see it before it's gone forever. And put on your list:
the 2020 NMRA National will be in St. Louis. # 2156 should be "home" by
then, along with other treasures in The St. L. MOT.

The coal fields are quickly changing. Yes, Pikeville is off line. However
by having the convention in Pikeville you will be kind of centralized to
different territories on the former N&W. You are 30 minutes from
Williamson, 45 minutes from Norton and the CV, 35 minutes from Weller Yard
and Buchanan Branch, 1:30 from Richlands and Kenova. There has been great
improvements in the highway system. All roads from Pikeville are easy four
lane drives now except the road to Weller and it is not that bad of a two
lane road. Being centrally located, hopefully you can have a chance to
explore the N&W coalfields of your choice before they are gone (ie..PD
District between Elmore and Princeton).

There will be a significant number of photos of current operations on the
Buchanan Branch in the upcoming TAF including some of SunCoke.
For the record - Weller yard is 45 minutes from Pikeville - Vansant, VA
where Sun Coke and Dismal Yard are located is 1 hour from Pikeville -
Williamson and the Pocahontas mainline are 35 minutes from Pikeville????.

mountain roads from Pikeville. To me, and not only to me, Pikeville is an
off-line location.
