Scene 1 appears to be the curve west of Ripplemead and the Big Stony
bridge. Second place goes to east of Pembroke in the big horseshoe curve
that today holds the Castle Rock Golf Course. The clue for west of Big
Stony is in the going-away shot, where the hillside is sloping down above
the train, the set of rapids in the river, and the "beach" on the far bank.
The 3D Google Earth view looking west into the curve helps bear this out (

The second scene is approaching Glen Lyn, passing under the Virginian
bridge over the New River.
