Jim:
About the overhead bridge at Colley Avenue -- the hamburger
herald places it in the era before J. P. Fishwick. Hopper trains
doubling from the empty side at Lamberts Point would occupy
the bridge over Virginia Beach Blvd., but Colley Avenue was
crossed at grade even into the late 60s and the railroad couldn't
block this thoroughfare for extended periods of time.
N&W made arrangements with the Norfolk Police Department to block
Colley Avenue one morning before the rush to work started. A hopper
train doubled-over several times, made the air test, and left with about 400
empties. It was diverted to the Jarratt District at South Norfolk.
No, it wasn't a record-breaker and it didn't even make the 6:00 PM news,
but the railroad didn't receive any complaints from motorists -- probably
because the police were at the scene.
