Jim,
The third photo is the supply house next to the west end of the Eckman
roundhouse. The girder structure is a transfer gantry that spans the
platform and both tracks and doubles as a lift to repair "shop" cars on
the near "shop" track. I suspect that is an anvil and an acetylene tank
along with the wheel sets. This capability would have been consolidated
at Kimball Yard when Eckman closed.
Speaking of which, Eckman closed not long after the electrification was
scrapped. The catenary is down and towers gone, but in addition to the
presence of 2004, note the boxcar on the house track (unless the boxcar
was being loaded). The 2004 was regular power on the Vivian Yard Goat, a
daylight job out of Eckman that worked tipples from Landgraff to Kimball
and up Carswell Hollow. When Eckman closed, the job was moved to
Bluefield and was called Third Vivian (V3).
Nice find, Jim.
The first photo appears to be #26 with an M1 and an Approach Diverging
to take the Tug Fork EB main past Tug Tower, then the Welch Loop for a
station stop downtown. The Powhatan Arrows would meet here, depending on
the schedule, station and Farm coaling stop (note the topped up bunker).
The station name is Hemphill, but the "working" location name depended
on which main and the adjoining spur. Hemphill was on the EB main and
was the name of the spur to the right. It served some tipples into the
forties and was used by EB freights to set off for the Farm and River
Locals, who then used the two-track spur to set their cars up for
delivery in Welch.
Slick Rock was on the WB main and spur, formerly for a loadout of the
same name, later an APCO pole yard and a bakery. Both spurs followed the
original main line alignment.
Another nice find, Jim.
