I think black was standard.
Jim Nichols
Bridges on the former P&WV and W&LE were black, but as
new EPA regulations became effective, any lead-based paint
sand blasted from bridges had to be collected and disposed
of properly -- no more paint chips left on the ground or dropping
into the water. This brought on an innovation -- spray the bridges
with grease and forget blasting. Just west of Rook (Pittsburgh)
was the Whiskey Run viaduct. It was greased, and on hot days
the grease would drip, some ending up on the 4-lane thru-way
to the airport. Highway traffic had been known to spin-out passing
beneath the bridge.
