Wow, thanks for all of the great citations! Now I know what book my wife will be getting me for my birthday... :-)

Brent -
Trains #5 and #6 continued to run until the last run on April 4, 1959 pulled primarily by GP-9 #790. There is a description of the last run of train # 5 and #6 is on pages 200-201 of Norfolk and Western's Clinch Valley Line by Ed Wolfe, Bucky Wilson and me (available from the Commissary if you do not have it).
There is a photo of #790 pulling train #5 out of Bluefield toward Norton on July 24, 1958 on page 118 of Norfolk and Western First Generation Diesels by Paul Withers and Bob Bowers. The same photo is on page 198 of the Clinch Valley Line book, and also on page 13 of The Arrow Vol 20, No. 4 as part of the article titled "The Clinch Valley Line" that Bucky Wilson and I wrote.
There is also a July 23, 1958 photo of #790 pulling train #6 across one of the Bull Run trestles on page 198 of the Clinch Valley Line book, and another July 23, 1958 photo of #790 pulling train #6 at Norton on page 219 of that book.
Hope this helps.

No. These trains operated with diesels for several months; I have photos
made at Norton of GP9 790 arriving on #5.

I know these pacifics were last used on the train to Norton #5, but I
would like to know when the last runs were, and the last use of the
engines in service. Was train #5 discontinued at this time(1957-58)
causing these engines to be surplus? Thanks, Greg Scholl
