Could it have been knowledge of the coal and iron deposits in the mountains around Pulaski?
N&W's 1890 Annual Report has a map showing two coke furnaces
and a zinc works at Pulaski, a mine spur diverting from the main
line at Clark's Summit and a coke furnace at Max Meadows. It
also shows a prominent Draper Mountain paralleling Peak Creek
