Yes, almost all Class Z’s had D-Slide valves on the LP cylinders, but there were a few that got the piston valves on the front cylinders. I have numbers of those identified in late steam that had them but at least one got the piston valves as built and that was 1438. The photo here show the piston valve cylinder which looks to me as that of the K-1, not the front engine of the 1461.

The Z-1 front cylinder had a slide valve, valves in wreck photo appear to be round . Ron H

Looks like a head-on collision to me with a mallet involved because of the cylinder visible below the running board midway. The air pumps shown partially through the running board sure match with the NWHS Z1a builders photo of 1308 fireman’s side.

If you tell me the date could have Oct. 20, 1920 and it was a head end collision and the railroad location was Rural Retreat I may have the answer.
There was a Head-end collision passenger trains (17?) with # 558 and 14 with # 102 near Rural Retreat. You will note there was another head end wreck near this location in 1918 with the 102 and a big one, Z1a 1461.
Both the 558 and 102 were rebuilt.

Before some weenie waves his hand and screams, "Gottscha ! ," and tells me that No. 18 was not the Memphis Special, let me publicly acknowledge my own failure and inadequacy in this respect. I repent of my error and I recant my grievous error.
In the future I shall do better, think harder and longer, make no more mistakes.
Parce mihi peccata mea.
