Bud,
Thanks for this extra info on the Y2a conversions for both Roanoke and Baldwin built Y2 locos. Jim and Larry’s photos are very helpful. This is a very unique and obscure fact of N&W loco construction. Does make you wonder who thought it necessary to actually apply a second plate to these locos. Nice to get such a definitive answer.

John,
Evidently when Roanoke converted the original Y-2’s, a second builders plate was added noting the upgrade and reclassification to Y-2a. The builder numbers did not change but the change involved major changes to the boiler, running gear and steam distribution system (including totally new front LP cylinders) based on experienced gained in service. The 1705-10 were built with these changes. Roanoke Shops added a second builder plate to each engine converted and this is unusual but was done for whatever the reason by the railway. If I get what data was on the second plate I will let you know.

Jim,
Minor correction: Original Y2a Roanoke-built group was 6 locos, 1705 – 1710 according the Prince and Jefferies text.
1700 – 1704 Roanoke-built were originally Y2 later rebuilt to Y2a.
But how does this explain what appears to be double builder plates? Yes, please share photos of both type of plates.
I also find photos of Baldwin built 1716 and 1717 with these same type of double plates.

The original class Y2 were rebuilt in the early 20's as class Y2a. Only the 1704 to 1710 were built as class Y2a. With the exception of the the original 7 Y2a, all others built by Roanoke and Baldwin were given an additional Roanoke Shops Y2a rebuilt when rebuilt.
If you want photos of both types of plates let me know.

Does anyone know the reason for what appears to be double Builder Plates on
Y2 1703 and 1701? There may be others.
