The station at Burkeville had the same train order signal as Bedford. This
was probably because of the distance from the station to the N&W tracks,
plus the telegraph table was in the bay window on the side next to the
Southern track. The Southern track was north of the station and the N&W
tracks were South of the station.

 Hello, all:

Please see the attached 1958 image currently on eBay which includes the
Bedford train order signal. It is evident that the signal is located some
distance from the depot and is operated by semaphore motors in the cases at
the bottom of the mast. Does anyone recall other N&W locations at which
the train order signals were activated in a similar manner rather than
using the conventional linkage to levers inside the operator's office?

Thank you,

Frank:

I'm very familiar with that location, as the station building is now a very
nice restaurant. They would have been almost right across from the
station, but as you can see in the picture, the station was on the inside
of a curve and the building itself not particularly visible to westbound
trains. I suspect that's the basis of where the train order signal was
positioned.

Frank:
Landon Gregory occasionally worked at Bedford as operator. He told me
he was on hand at the passenger station to sell tickets at train time, then
circulated to the freight station (on the original main line through
Bedford)
to do clerical work. Maybe the signal was arranged so that it could be
manipulated from either station.

No doubt visibility played a part. On June 11, 1945, Extra 1233 East
passed
the signal and rear-ended a local east of the overhead bridge in the
background:
1 killed, 2 injured. ICC attributed the collision to overspeed. Harry

Harry's parenthetical note about the original main line alignment west of
Bedford reminds me that when the NWHS 2004 Convention was in Roanoke, Bev
Fitzpatrick drove the bus that took a group to the D-Day Memorial in
Bedford. Coming down the Rt. 460 bypass west of Bedford, he remarked that
its alignment was partially on the old N&W alignment.
