Pusher vs. helper

N&W Time Table #11 (eff. 04/28/1957) shows tonnaqe
ratings "with and without pushers".  Also the "Honey Hole"
east of Vinton is listed as a "pusher siding"  in the location of
 outside phones..So pusher is how N&W chose to I.D. them.
You didn't ask but -- the lead steam engine leaving Roanoke
(usually a Y) went to Phoebe to lift the train over Bray's Hill.  It
turned on the wye there and sometimes coupled to a west-
bound for the return to Roanoke.    Harry Bundy
