The 720th did indeed operate in France during WWII, along with the 713th, the 727th, and the 757th. Other units operated in North Africa, Alaska, Sicily. See this article for a full listing.

Thank you for your reply.
I will double check my information. As I said, I am asking for another family member. It is possible that I miscopied or transposed a number.
Also, thank you for the link.

I checked the index to records of Railway Operating Battalions at the National Archives. They have records for the 714th and 724th, but not the 720th. Are you sure of the number? Requests may be sent to NARA via: archives2reference at nara.gov<mailto:archives2reference at nara.gov>

I know that the Railroad Operation Battalions of WWII have been discussed here before. I have a friend who is researching a relative (now passed) who served with the 720th Railroad Operation Battalion in France and later in Germany. My friend recalls his relative talking about assisting in the liberation of a concentration camp in or near Germany near the end of the war.
Any help the group could provide about the 720th operational area or exploits would be appreciated. I have attached a couple of photos that my friend had that shows the type of equipment that the unit used.
Many thanks.
