Tonnage Ratings and Weather Reductions for Locomotives

   Exceeding tonnage ratings on diesel locomotives can lead toa disaster -- mainly burning up the traction motors.  At Roanokeit was the practice to build the train first and if the power suppliedwasn't sufficient to handle the tonnage -- tough.  In a study made,there was one coal train, with pushers, routed to the ShenandoahDivision that was 1800 tons over the limit.  Harry Bundy
