Norris, Unusual to me that the VGN started using date nails nearly 20 years
after NW.
"The secret is to know where to look for them." Strangely one of the best
locations I ever found for NW date nails was in the woods behind Lane
Stadium in Blacksburg. The crossties there had come from the Blacksburg
Branch and contained many nails from the 20's and 30's.
I have a 1961 date nail that was given to me. Any idea what road it might be
from? Due to the source I feel pretty certain that it would be from an
eastern road.

John,
I have never seen any VGN date nails in the wild. I purchased these already
cleaned and in their wooden and glass cage. Ha! I have had the pleasure of
hunting down some orginal N&W date nails years ago. The secret is to know
where to look for them. If I remember correctly I first thought that they
were nailed into the end of the ties but in reality they were nailed on the
top of the ties near the railroad spikes.
Happy hunting,
Norris

Norris,
Thank you for this reply and the nice photo. Did you have the pleasure of
collecting some of these yourself?

John,
I have a framed box of VGN crosstie date nails in my collection. The dates
are 1940 - 1958. Hope my answer is correct.
Happy Holidays,
Norris

I hope this has not been answered a hundred times before but I don't
remember seeing it on the list.
During what years did the Virginian use date nails?
