Broken loco driver spokes

Would the same rough timeframe apply to the K1s?

The roller bearing axles for the trailing K2/a trailing truck is an interesting detail. I assume it was a retrofit into the existing journal box similar to some of the early freight car conversions?

I don’t have the date that each J got the solid front wheels. The date of the mechanical drawing was 1948 listing the new solid wheels for the J’s, and 1949 for the K2’s. The 611 to 613 were built with the solid wheels and the first eleven J’s got them when shopped beginning at about the time the last three J’s were being built. When the K2’s received the solid wheels, they also got roller bearing axles on the lead and trailer trucks.

The lead truck wheels on 600-610 were not replaced until after the 611-613 were built. 611 was the first streamlined engine with the solid wheels. Shortly after, all J's K2's and K2a's got the sold wheels.

I can't remember where I read this, but an incident in the late
1940's with a K2 locomotive in passenger service prompted the change
from spoke lead truck wheels to solid wheels. A broken wheel derailed
the lead truck, but not the locomotive.

Referring to the K2's, page 151 of Colonel Jeffries book states
"Beginning in 1949, rolled steel wheels replaced the spoked engine
truck wheels."
In the chapter on the J class, page 246, he states "In 1948 the spoke
engine truck wheels were replaced by solid steel wheels." Although
Prince's book has a photo of 607 in 1950 with spoke lead truck wheels
p.179). I believe the photo's date is correct because 607 is coupled
to a P-1 Powhatan Arrow coach/crew car.
