Actually, it was Champion McDowell Davis purple, after the ACL president who put it on there.

I remember that the color of the ACL units was described as, "pokeberry purple."

  In 1958, then N&W President Stuart Saunders began dieselizing the N&W. He leased E6’s and E7’s from the Atlantic Coast Line and Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac to replace the J’s on all passenger trains across the system. 

  There was a Sheb Wooley  song written in  1958 and in June of that year, it became
  #1 in  popularity. Because the ACL E units were frequently involved in grade crossing
  fatalities, they were frequently ID'ed by the song's name - " Purple People - eaters"
