Thanks to all for the comprehensive info regarding the feedwater heater on 1218 (and many other locomotives). I have had the pleasure of photographing the can type on the big Texas & Pacific but readily admit the Worthington style is a more intelligent design.

 

On a newer “photo op”, yesterday my wife and I drove up to Roanoke to observe the mass storage of NS locomotives. It was a sobering sight but as it was not an historic NW event I have held back from attaching any pix.
