The photo was taken from the north side. Left is east going to Eckman Yard and Keystone and right is west heading toward Landgraff. Dans Branch is off to the Left. Keystone is located at MP N-387.6, Eckman Yard was basically located between MP N-387.47 and MP N-388.03 and Dans Branch left the mainline at N-388.22. Eckman station was located at MP N-388.35 and Landgraff was located at MP N-389.30.

The attached photos show an aerial view of Eckman from about 1927. The first three buildings from the right are Eckman Station, the theater/recreation building and the Pulaski Iron Company store. Dans Branch and the Pulaski Iron Company coke ovens and tipple are shown from the right edge toward the center of the photo. The Shawnee Coal & Coke Company tipple and coke ovens are shown from the photo center toward the left edge. The drawing shoes the basic coal company layout along Dans Branch.

“The Norfolk & Western in West Virginia – 1881 ~ 1959,” available from the commissary, defines all of the branch/spur lines in West Virginia as well as station locations, mining operations and bridge locations by the original mileposts that are used on the track charts.

Alex,

Thanks for the insight. Is the image taken from the north side on the mainline looking south, as the mainline runs east-west? I know the Dan's Branch, at least currently, runs off on the main to the south under the Hwy 52 overpass.

Eckman is located between Keystone on the east and Landgraff on the west. The Pulaski Iron Company, Eureka Coal & Coke Company, and Shawnee Coal & Coke Company had mines at Eckman. Eckman Yard was located between Keystone on the east and Eckman on the west.

The picture shows the original Pulaski Iron Company store built in 1897. To the left of the store is the Pulaski Iron Company/Eckman recreation hall and theater. The train station was located to the left of the theater.

The hoppers behind the store are on Dans Branch and in front of the remains of the Pulaski Iron Company coke ovens, which were closed in the late 1920s. The tipple was located on Dans Branch, but to the right and out of the picture.
