The first (1908) coal hauling gondola cars specifically designed for the Virginian were intended to be unloaded with the use of a Hewlett unloading machine whereby the gondola car is clamped into a frame work that would then turn the car over bodily. (American Engineer and Railroad Journal, Vol. 82, Oct. 1908, p. 413) Can anyone tell me if that process of unloading was actually used and if so for how long?
