In September 1960 the East Tennessee Chapter of the NRHS hosted its national convention. An excursion was run over the Southern to Appalachia using SRR power. From Appalachia to Middlesboro KY to the train was powered by two L&N RS3s. At Middlesboro the SRR took over again with two F units and ran to Knoxville and then to Bristol. I rode this trip and remember what a long day it was as smoking was permitted in the train which made for a really bad headache. A trip which I did not take was over the N&W to Saltville where the Mathieson Chemical Co. 2-8-0 ex N&W G Class was fired up and ran for the group. Another trip over the Clinchfield was run the next day using one of the ET&WNC 2-8-0s. Hope this is of some help.

I know 475 and a Southern Silverside gon (brand new) were displayed in Bristol and I’ve seen a poor slide of 2 Redbirds hauling a passenger train, likely a special with conventioneers, at the Abingdon station. I’d like to know more about this convention, especially excursion trips.
