Gary Hoover asked: "In the 1950s, if a train was to pick up orders while passing a station (without stopping) and the station had a lower quadrant semaphore-style train order signal, what position would the blade be in: horizontal, full down or middle position?"

A yellow aspect was displayed with the spectical and blade at a 45-degree angle. This is the "middle position" that you mentioned. Also, this was for N&W train order signals. The VGN, NKP, and WAB had different styles but for all, a yellow aspect was displayed for a clearance card and 19 orders.

Please visit Boyce depot to see the levers during "Morse Day" on April 25, 2020. The Boyce Railway Depot Foundation has all of the US&S components for a train order signal but assistance is requested for sand-blasting the cast iron parts and reassembly as a display.
