Passenger Coal vs. Freight Coal on the N&W

Abram,
When I worked as a laborer in the N&W Durham Shop the summers of '52,
'53 and '54, we had two grades of coal for coaling locomotives, "road"
coal and "yard" coal. The former was like "run-of-mine" coal with a lot
of "fines." The latter had fewer fines and probably had a lower
volatility chemistry, both of which would help reduce pollution
complaints in the Durham urban environment where the single yard
locomotive operated (a Class M when I first went there and a Class S1a
by my last summer there). The K1 passenger locomotives were fueled with
"road" coal.
