Norris:
I am back at my desk and the following are edits for Q #1:
Last order of N&W SD40-2's - #6189-6207, Blt in 12/80.
The SD50S's were also built in 12/80
The first order of C36-7's #8500-8505 were built in 3/81 and #8506-8530 were built in 6/82. The 8531 series C36-7's (Ph. II's with the high cap'y DB's were delivered as NS with NW reporting marks. A couple of the very early 8500's were later rebuilt with the newer DB's.

Subject: RE: Questions?? Fw: [DieselRosterData] NS Roster Changes February 2020
Norris,
Answers are as follows:
1. I think the SD-40-2 locomotives listed (6080-6176) may be the last of the pre-merger N&W units.
N&W bought SD40-2's that were numbered 6177-6205 and were bought post 1980. They also bought 6 - SD50S's - #6500-6505, which are SD50 demo units built on SD40-2 frames. N&W also received C36-7's #8500-8521, prior to the merger. There was an order of C36-7 Ph. II's that were bought prior to but delivered after the merger and were in full NS paint.
2. I do not see any SD-70’s listed (?)
I wonder why?
Most of the NS bought SD70's have been rebuilt into SD70ACC's, 1800 # series.
3. Aren't/weren’t the SD-80-MAC’s acquired from UP a few years ago?
Seems strange that they would sell the newer 80’s vs the older ‘70’s considering emission standards, ‘Bell’s & whistles’, etc
What NS bought from UP and CEFX Leasing were SD9043MAC's, not 80MAC's. The 9043's were 4300 hp convertable units while EMD tried to figure out a 6,000 hp prime mover. The 16 cyl 712 capped out at 4,500 hp, with the 20 cyl version capping out at 5,000 hp, which is what was in the SD80MAC. The SD9043MAC's NS bought from UP and CEFX have been rebuilt into SD70ACu's and the 7250 series.
4. Did NS ever buy any new SD-80-MAC’s or were they all bought “surplus”?
Conrail bought the only 30 SD80MAC's ever built, including the two demo units. At the CR split, the fleet was split between NS and CSX, but NS later traded a handful of rebuilt SD40-2s for the CSX SD80MAC'S.
5. The 9000 series GE’s being sold as “core units” for “rebuilds”....I am assuming the engines (& electronics?) will be removed & upgraded? Not sure.
All of the C40-9's and a large portion of the C40-9W's have been rebuilt into AC44C6M's, 4000 series, and most of the remaining units will be rebuilt over the next few years into more of the same.
Hope this helps.

All,
I’m a retired car salesman and know very little about locomotives. Ha! I told Herb that I know which ones are pretty. I collect slides of locomotives because I like their paint schemes or body designs. Whether they are desirable locomotives to operate will be something that I will leave to the engineers to discuss.
So if any of you care to help answer Herb’s questions I know he would appreciate that. I will also. Who knows? I may learn a thing or two myself. They say we never are too old to teach! I hope that applies to me. LOL! Just reply back to me and I will share your answers with others.
Thanks,
Norris

WOW!
The storage line in zRoanoke will be emptying out pretty soon it seems.
I have a couple of observations/notes/questions:
1. I think the SD-40-2 locomotives listed (6080-6176) may be the last of the pre-merger N&W units.
2. I do not see any SD-70’s listed (?)
I wonder why?
3. Aren't/weren’t the SD-80-MAC’s acquired from UP a few years ago?

5. The 9000 series GE’s being sold as “core units” for “rebuilds”....I am assuming the engines (& electronics?) will be removed & upgraded? Not sure.
Thanks for any knowledge you can share.
Thanks
Herb

Chris,
Isn't NS 7229 an SD70ACu? Did they sell one of those off?
