Peter:  Expect you will get multiple responses.  The N&W was shipping coal from Lamberts Point for more than half a centurybefore they acquired the VGN.  The VGN pier, at Sewells Point, was retired almost immediately after the acquisition.  The N&Wdid not need the VGN pier or the declining VGN coal reserves;  they wanted the easier grades offered by the VGN route eastof Roanoke.  A side result was ending the VGN electrification on their primarily single track route.
