Here is a Google view of what the crews and the taxi drivers call 99.
Trains sometimes pull east to clear State Street and do the crew swap
there.

I appreciate Ed's clarification as to the 1956 photo's identity.  Also, my
reference to 99 being east of Wyndale was a shortening of MP 399.

The possibility that the 99 refers to the number of cars that can be stored
sounds plausible.
