That was done circa 1890 and there was a lot of straightening (i.e. reducing curvature), grade reduction and double tracking. All of this was due to moving coal that began in 1883.

Thanks for sharing, Bruce. I really enjoyed that, and it helps to bring alive the story of the V&T (as well as the AM&O). I'm having fun using Google Maps now to explore that terrain. The narrator mentioned she was within 50 feet of the NS roadbed, so I guess they did a fair bit of straightening through there.

This video popped up in my Facebook timeline when a friend liked it. It is from the Wilderness Road Regional Museum and shows a portion of the original Virginia & Tennessee roadbed between Christiansburg and Vicker, including a bridge abutment next to Crab Creek. As the narrator says, it is on private property so the exact location isn't identified.
