Different railroads had different ways of accomodating the head-end brakeman. B&O extended the cabs of some 2-8-2a on the left side so a thrid seat could be applied. The Clinchfield changed the left-side water leg of some tenders for a brakeman’s seat.
The Southern put doghouses on some tenders of the K 2-8-0s whose tenders had stokers so the brakeman wouldn’t have to climb over the coal and risk running afoul of the screw.

We've probably heard enough about doghouses, but this is one of my favorites. The brakeman is out for some air. An N&W photo. Y3 2033 blt Alco Schenectady 1919, scrapped 5-1958. I found it at a show years ago.
