I'm sorry to learn of Tom Sink's demise. Soon after I settled in
Roanoke I became acquainted with a group who had a great time playing
with his model train layout in his attic. What made this fun
distinctive is that the trackage on his layout had multiple tracks with
some complex groups of switches and he had two locomotives that he could
operate simultaneously. Two of us would each man an assigned group of
switches, and both locomotives would be set in motion. It was the
responsibility of each of us to try to operate our assigned switches to
shunt a locomotive coming into our "interlocking" such that the two
locomotives would not collide in our interlocking but would collide in
the other "operator's" interlocking. There were penalties for using our
hands to hold one or both locomotives to prevent a collision in our
respective interlockings. It is surprising how rugged the model
locomotives were considering how many times all precautions failed and a
collision occurred. Some 60 or so years dims my always feeble memory,
but I think that the other participants might have included Ed King and
Jim Blackstock. How about it you guys?
