"40" Crews

In the mid 1950s and later there were three Roanoke Yard crews first and second shift which gathered the cars in the "bowl" or classification yard and made them into eastbound trains in the forwarding yard. They were known as:
840 (Middle ladder)
940 (Punk ladder)
1040 (Coal side)
What do the numbers and names refer to? What tracks in the class yard did they work with? What yard office did the work out? Thanks!
