Jim,
You are right. The RR had so many customers along Shenandoah Ave and on the south side of the yard as well. So much manufacturing as well as wholesale and retail businesses. Everything was so much more local back then.
Hope that '10th St. soda pop' tasted good. Thanks for the memories.
John Garner

The Wasena bridge is scheduled to be replaced. A little story on that bridge.
An older lady that worked in my office at the, GOB, lived in the Wasena area when she was a young girl. She was playing with her friends one day and they challenged her to walk across the bridge on top of that narrow ledge. She made it from one side to the other with out falling off the ledge.
Ken Tanner sure hope you never tried that. Every time I cross that bridge I think about that dumb thing kids do.
John G. - That was not that bad of an area in my time. I think I even stopped at the store on the north side to get a soft drink. Your photo of the C-3 was great. How about all the railroad customers in that area. Lindsey Robertson flour mill, Hodges Lumber and two of the 3 or 4 coal companies. Hatcher Coal and Cummings Coal. In addition you can see the dust collector for Wells Furniture Co on the North side of Shenandoah Ave. The south side of the tracks had a number of customers also. There was a fire that destroyed the flour mill not long after your photo. The only thing left at last check was a silo and the new office building at the flour mill.

>> In the steam era caboose roofs were painted brown or with Dednox or Mortex (alphalt compounds). But only the roof tops. Facia was red like the body. In time, of course, the brown tended to weather to a more blackish or dark gray appearance. But in the later red schemes, the roof was red like the body.
