Harry,
This is great info, thanks. With this new info, I think it is time to summarize all of the info that has been posted on the Mailing List about the discontinuance of passenger service between Lynchburg and Durham, so here goes.
FINAL PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICE
Aug. 28, 1954 - This date is the day prior to first appearance of mixed trains 71 and 72 in operating timetables. - Harry Bundy 9/23/2020 email
Late August (or less likely early September) - personal recollection. - Gordon Hamilton 9/21/2020 email
Late 1953 or early 1954 - Warden/Miller's book. - John Garner 9/20/2020 email
FINAL MIXED TRAIN SERVICE
Apr. 28, 1957 - Public timetable shows mixed train in effect. - Ken Miller 9/22/2020 email
By Jun. 30, 1957 - Public timetable stamped schedule changes see agent. - Ken Miller 9/22/2020 email
By Oct. 27, 1957 - Public timetable states, "Freight Service Only." - Ken Miller 9/22/2020 email
By 1958 - Warden/Miller's book. - John Garner 9/20/2020 email
By Jan. 1, 1958 - Nos. 71 and 72 had become fourth class with no scheduled station stops. - Harry Bundy 9/23/2020
By Jun. 15, 1958 - Public timetable states ,"Freight Service Only." - Larry Stone 9/21/2020 email
By Aug. 26, 1959 - Not in Aug. 26, 1959 operating timetable. - Harry Bundy 9/21/2020 email.
The best conclusion that I can make from the above is that passenger train service ended on Aug. 28, 1954 and that mixed train service ended sometime between Apr. 28, 1957 and Jun. 30, 1957.

Seems I overlooked a Supplement "A" to Norfolk Div.
time table #7 -- Nos. 71-72 appeared eff. Aug. 29, 1954.

I didn't find any supplements for the discontinuance
of Nos. 71-72, BUT when Time Table #12 was issued
(Jan. 1, 1958), Nos. 71-72 had become a fourth class
train Mon-Sat. only and no scheduled station stops.
