Model Trains On Display At C&O Heritage Center

CLIFTON FORGE — A display of operating model trains highlighting historical scenes along the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway will take place Saturday, Oct. 10, at the C&O Railway Heritage Center.

C&O Historical Society members specializing in building and operating N Scale model trains will meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to discuss and exhibit layouts and professional-grade modules.

Any member of the public visiting the C&O Railway Heritage Center is invited to attend and enjoy these exhibits, together on display for the C&O Historical Society for the first time, for the regular ticket cost of $8 for adults and $5 for children. Exhibitors plan to set up and meet in the Heritage Center’s Freight House museum.

The C&O N Scale Modelers Meet will not be a full train show with vendors, but will specialize in only this one particular model scale that represents structures and rail equipment that is 1:60th of actual size.
Appropriate for the current national environment, this event, where face coverings will be required in accordance with commonwealth of Virginia guidelines, is expected to draw a safer, smaller group of attendees where social distancing can be observed.

In attendance at the meet will be several master modelers ready to share model-ing tips and guidance while exhibiting modules they have personally constructed to represent C&O Railway scenes.

The C&O Railway Heritage Center’s gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The on-site gift shop at 705 Main St. in Clifton Forge will offer some modeling inventory for enthusiasts who attend the meet. In addition, rides on the 1/8th-scale Little C&O train will be offered for $5.

Because this is not a fullscale train show, the C&OHS expects all visitors to be protected when attendees to comply with all commonwealth of Virginia guidelines related to the pandemic.

The C&O Railway Heritage Center is a railway heritage museum, interpretive, educational, and visitor’s center that tells the story of the C&O Railway: the people, the places, and the technology. The story is the essential American tale of how our nation grew, how we lived and worked, and how we were all connected together by twin rails of steel. The purpose of this center is also to honor the memory and contribution of all the railroaders who built the railroads that allowed our nation to prosper, and all those railroaders who continue to keep America moving by rail.

The Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to interpreting the American railway experience using C&O Railway’s history through drawings, documents, and artifacts which the Society collects, preserves, and makes available to as broad an audience as possible.

The society was organized in January 1969, and in 1975 was incorporated as a non-profit eleemosynary organization within the meaning or subparagraph 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
