Star Routes

In doing some research I became curious about the origins of the term "Star
Route," and found the following quotation while Googling.  I forgot the
source, but saved the text:

 

 

"Celerity, certainty, security" were the words repeatedly symbolized by
asterisks (stars) in the off-railway mail "star route" bid documents.  These
were the contractors' service pledge.
