Origin of Switchback

Larry,

Why all the trouble of a switchback after 1950? Why not just run up the 
hill to the old main? Was it to create a trailing-point switch on the W 
Bound main?

And I'm probably missing something here, but pls remind me how was the 
valley below (i.e. Mabeury) accessed after the 1950 line relocation.
