Pier cars

Sort of. I was a teen but I had an uncle and a cousin who actually operated the cars. The coal came in in regular hopper cars. They would take a car and dump it into a pier car by flipping it over. The pier cars were electric , they had two controls, accelerate and brake They could move around on the pier to the place where the coal was to be dumped into the ship's hold. When the car was in place, there was a switch that opened the bay doors and the coal flowed out into the ship. This had to be done carefully as too much weight could damage the ship.
