Graphite Boiler Jacketing

I've seen the graphited boiler jackets along with cyl liners and some fireboxes on other engines besides N&W S-1a. Western Maryland had some done this way too.
I suspect it's a purely cosmetic enhancement as if it had some merit as anti-corrosion or something I would think more than just a handful of engines would have it done. My guess is it's probably a specific engine used for one job or purpose or maybe a crew taking pride in their assigned engine. It's a very different way to paint an engine and I've painted some for customers over the years. I generally use paint when I do one but many years ago Joe Luber of Pro Custom Hobbies showed me one he did using Kadee Greas-um but rubbing the boiler with it. Very nice effect.
As to the reason? I don't know. Maybe for the same reason a switcher assigned to a passenger station was decked out in different colors and "dolled up"?
I like it and have 2 more engines to do this way for me.

Hi all. The Gary Kreines channel on YouTube has several mis-fifties color films posted, including the following.
At about the 2:08 mark are several sequences of an S1 at Joyce Yard with a silver jacketing on the boiler. I assume this is graphite paint, similar or the same as applied to unjacketed smokeboxes.
A couple of Facebook commentators say they remember seeing these on occasion - but the so-far unanswered question is why this was done?
Is it a primer layer? Were they out of black paint? Crew pride?
