Matt - There was a terminal on the N&W that specialized in welding rail. Portsmouth ? One of their specialties was captioned "relay rail". As 39' rail remained in place, the section closest to the angle bars suffered what was known as "joint batter". - a passing train would cause the rail joints to pump up and down, especially in wet weather. As the rail ends moved, it changed the contour of the rail. Before welding, 3 feet from each end of the relay rail was cut off. Maybe that's why the 155 lb PS rail initially installed on the Kenova District ended up on the Buchanan Branch. Harry Bundy
