The railroad was controlled in the early days by the investment bank, E.W. Clarke & CO. which was headquartered in Philadelphia. They also controlled the L&N in that time period. With the booms and busts of the 1980s they lost control and moved into the financing of public utilities. (Someone covered this is a book sponsored by the NWHS).
