There’s a lot of good information at the Internet Archive, even if they are a little casual about copyrights (a friend in the music business is outraged about all the copyrighted recordings on IA). I discovered by happenstance that scans of a bound volume of all the 1927 issues of “Railway and Locomotive Engineering” are available online at archive.org. The November ’27 issue has a four page article on the then – new “Electric Locomotive Maintenance Shop of the Virginian.” The very interesting article has a couple of photos of the shop, a track plan for the shop and the adjacent area, and a detailed floor plan for the motor barn complete with dimensions. This building has a special significance to me. My mother’s uncle was the long time principal of Mullens High School and mayor of the town for at least one term. He took my brother and I to the motor barn once and I have a vague memory of sitting in the engineer’s seat of what I’d like to think was an EL-C. Anyway, the bound volume is here:

The motor barn article is on pages 310 to 314. If you select “one page view” in the buttons in the lower right, right – click on each page, and select “save image as…,” you can download the individual page scans.

Thanks for the pointer, Rob! Those issues will be very helpful.

I am on something of a quest here, inspired by the late Saltwater Salmon.  My long-term goal is to find all issues, scan to PDF, and create a full-text-searchable index that can be freely shared. Hopefully this resource will be of use to enthusiasts and historians of ALL roads, today and into the future. (Plus the PDF form is a lot less crumbly, and therefore better for late night reading. :D  )  The later years are still covered by copyright, so it's doubtful there will be a DVD or suchlike in the near future, but starting the journey may reveal other options.

* For those who find it fun to watch someone else tilt at windmills, I'm attaching a PDF showing current collection status. I've tracked down 334 of 739 issues believed to have been published before White River Publications took over the publication in 1979. Pointers toward or contribution of missing issues would be profoundly appreciated, and will be appropriately credited.
