Re: Railroad Magazine and all its named predecessors

First: White River did not take it over in 1979, that was Cartsens who took
it over and merged it into its growing Railfan Magazine and changed the
name to Railfan & Railroad with Jim Boyd as the editor until he passed away
some 20 years later. White River came into the picture in 2014 and took R&R
over in mid-2014 and has expanded and grown it since then.

Second: In 2006 I did an article on the magazine Railroad portion of it for
the December 2006 Railfan & Railroad issue. It was published based upon the
100th anniversary of the original titled magazine of October 1906 as a
first of its kind back then. From then until January 1919 it ran under a
succession of titles: The Railroad Man's Magazine, then with "the" removed,
then for 6 issues it ran under the name The Railroad & Current Mechanics,
from January 1914 to November 1918 it continued as a monthly under Railroad
Man's & similar until it went weekly for its last 12 issues starting with
the November 2, 1918 weekly  and ending with January 18, 1919, then for 4
months it was merged into another of Frank Munsey's empire of pulp
magazines, Argosy as Argosy & Railroad Man's Magazine but had nothing to do
with railroads and then disappeared.

It reappeared in December 1929, great timing in hindsight of course as
Railroad Man's Magazine, changed over to Railroad Stories in early 1932,
then they dropped the "stories" part of the title and it simply became just
Railroad thru the remaining time of its life, its last pulp issue was
August 1954 after which it became a 9x12 or thereabouts until it breathed
its last with the January 1979 issue and was merged into Railfan effective
with the May 1979 and has been there ever since.

Along the way, there are many great articles and stories about many
railroads including the N&W of course and the next to last pure pulp issue
has a great one, the July 1954 issue about the N&W and steam, etc. That
article was published about the same time as Trains' N&W steam article from
later 1954 I think it was under David P. Morgan.

That's the long & short of it. There were 158 of the original October
1906-January 18 1919 run and I honestly don't recall at the moment how many
from 1929 to 1979 but I have them counted in the 2006 article.

I have a complete set of 1906 to 1979 in the FWIW department and most are
in superb condition, even considering they are the lousy pulp paper issue.
They sit proudly on my shelf for research purposes.

In short they are a superb source of info from a time and perspective not
found anywhere else and before the coming of Trains and the many RR
historical societies that have propagated since in more recent times.

To my best knowledge the copyrights are owned /controlled today by White
River upon the acquisition from Carstens who acquired the copyright from
Popular Publications in 1979.

That's likely more basic info than desired by most but there it is, the
most basic of it.
