#yiv0043732471 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}Thanks Andre for this great amount of information! I always wondered what made the Abington Branch so popular with modelers and others.FYI - I joined the society last month. I'm new to the N&W, and it is fun and exciting to learn about something new. My particular interest is the route to Hagerstown, MD.
BTW - There was a brass N&W caboose on Ebay recently. It had a small window on only one side. What was that window for?
Be well -

Subject: Re: Abingdon Branch Mr. Barna,
The Abingdon Branch is perhaps the most-famous branch line on the old N&W, with a fame that far outweighs, figuratively speaking, the tonnage hauled across it by the famous M-class steamers, or the diesels that succeeded them after 1957.
I’ll add to what Mr. Mandelkern typed that O. Winston Link’s 2 books of photos feature considerable coverage on the Branch. The newest Link book, “Life along the Line,” featured a systemwide map of the railroad on the front- and end-pieces. The Abingdon Branch is there, but too small for the various stations to show. The books can be ridiculously cheap to buy, last I checked.
The N&WHS’s archive also has a ton of material, with much of it searchable online. Dunno if you're already a member? If not, I highly recommend joining.
A Google search can also reveal a lot of info from varying sources. The first search that popped up tonight was a site that had a page from an old employee timetable listing all the stations on the branch:CSXTHS - Rail Fanning - N&W - Exploring the Virginia Creeper Trail and the Abingdon Branch

This site also has a bunch of photos of action on the line: https://hswv.pastperfectonline.com/bysearchterm?keyword=Abingdon+Branch&page=3
Model Railroader magazine has had at least 1 or 2 features on the Abingdon Branch, too. The Trains.com website should unearth them for you. The old N Scale Modeler and Mainline Modeler also had articles on Abingdon city and its RR structures. The C&O Historical Society has the Mainline Modeler collection for sale on a CD-ROM.
The various websites on the Virginia Creeper Trail that occupies part of the old roadbed will give you an idea of what the scenery looks like as well.
Hope this helps.

Mr. Barna-

I don’t see that anyone responded to your request for maps or other  publications about the Abingdon Branch.

The Abingdon Branch was part of the N&W Radford Division, and there may be track charts in the Society’s Archives for that division that include the Abingdon Branch.

Two good articles about the Abingdon Branch are: “An Abingdon Branch Accolade” in the June, 1984 issue of Trains magazine, and “Reflections on the Abingdon Branch” in the September, 1975 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman. Both articles contain small maps of the branch.

The book “The Last Steam Railroad in America” by O. Winston Link and Thomas H. Garver is entirely about the Abingdon Branch with beautiful photos by Winston Link.

Finally, there is the book “The Virginia Creeper in Ashe County” by the Ashe County Historical Society (Arcadia Publishing).

Hope these help.

Hello - I am new to the N&W. Several modelers I know have looked into modeling the Abington Branch. Are there maps or other publications on this line?
