derailer question

One use (perhaps the main use) was/is to protect active tracks from errant cars on side tracks which try to escape to the active line.

An example that existed for years in Lynchburg near the former 12th Street station on the Durham line was a derailer on a side track that served a junk yard. The sidetrack into the junk yard had a significant grade downhill toward the Durham line. If a freight car in the junk yard “escaped” it would have rolled into the active line (and crossed 12th Street at an unprotected crossing) at something greater than slow speed.

Agree. Didn’t see many but those I saw around Lynchburg were.

My best memory was they were painted yellow.

What color would these have been in the steam era? Were they rusty metal, or were they painted yellow? some other color?

(I'm still looking for a piece of wire to replace the white styrene strip)
