Sorry, I don't see adding some Norfolk Southern content as the end of the
world. If the present offers a path for followers of NS to connect with the
past, then that is A Good Thing. A prime example of how this could be
handled is happening right now in the New River Valley. What was once old
is new again. The Christiansburg passenger station, which went into
operation on Sept. 3, 1906, is being put back into service as a passenger
station for the Amtrak extension to the New River Valley. There will also
be servicing facilities built in Radford. This is all happening due to NS
agreeing to return passenger service to the Christiansburg District. It
won't take much to recount the history of passenger service through this
station, both local and long-distance, operated by the N&W and Amtrak on
N&W tracks. There are probably many other tie-ins that would be mostly
historical but give insight into current operations. One can't really talk
about the East End shops in Roanoke without ending the story with the
cutback by NS, the coming and going of Freight Car America, and the current
use of the facilities. I'm sure there are many other instances that would
come to mind with a little thought that would advance the society without
compromising its status as historian for the N&W and Virginian.
