Ash Pits

Jack, 

Ash pits were located on one of the inbound leads to the engine house, clustered close to the sand, fuel, and water facilities.  Attached are two an examples (fuel and water are not in the first image). 

The first image is demonstrating the location of a water softening plant in the 1947 Locomotive Cyclopedia. The second image is for a proposed yard on the N&W in Columbus. It was never built.
