Bluefield hump

There was no "hump" in the Bluefield yard. The high point was in the "middle" yard, a little east of the Mercer Street bridge. Bluefield had the reputation of "natural gravity yards in both directions." Coal loads used riders to brake them as they ran downhill from the scale house into the east yard where they were made up into trains.

Jim,I believe the photo in question was taken at the west end of the yard and much lower than up top. The Hump was located on the eastern side of the hill.

Jim,I’m pretty sure this was taken from the north end of the US Route 52 bridge or the adjacent Bluefield State College parking lot looking eastward. The building on the opposite side of the tracks with the car shed should be Bailey Lumber Company.
