Chillicothe-Scioto contains the crossing of the Scioto River, presumably<br>
this was done to reduce wear and tear on the bridge? Omega-Lunbeck I never<br>
realized this was ever doubled. All I can say is it is a remote, curvy<br>
stretch down near the river, if that has anything to do with it. Maybe to<br>
reduce maintenance costs? Good question, I hope someone will have more on<br>
this. I dispatch this part of the railroad.<br>

The segment between MP N-642 and N-652 (Omega to Lunbeck) was single-tracked<br>
in May 1959. The segment through Chillicothe was single-tracked sometime<br>
later, perhaps 1960.<br>
<br>
The "grand plan" at that time was to continue single-tracking large portions<br>
of the Columbus District, but when plans for the N&W-NKP-WAB merger<br>
developed, management realized that the Columbus District would no doubt see<br>
an increase in traffic, so the project was not continued.<br>

Anyone know the date and logic behind adding the two single track sections<br>
to the Columbus District between Omega and Lunbeck and again between<br>
Chillicothe and Scioto? I believe it was in the 60's which precedes most<br>
of the single tracking done by the feline mascot-ed competitor. I would<br>
have assumed the Columbus District would have taken a significant roll in<br>
the consolidation plans for when the NKP & Wabash were absorbed, so<br>
looking back now it s sort of surprising for it to have happened in the<br>
same time frame as the merger.<br>

Princeton, W. Va., April 6 (Special)--H. H. Rogers and party reached<br>
Princeton this afternoon on a special train, being accorded the biggest<br>
welcome the builder of the road has received anywhere along the line.<br>
Fully 2,000 enthusiastic persons and a brass band met the train and hailed<br>
Mr. Rogers as the greatest man the country ever produced. The special<br>
train stayed at Princeton tonight and will go tomorow to Deepwater, the<br>
western terminus of the road. Mr. Rogers will return to New York via<br>
Charleston.<br>

I was told, years ago, that the N&W single tracked this section because of a tax increase by Ross County. Single track would be taxed at half of the of the original assessment for the double track. I take this tale with a grain of salt. Single track would double the wear on the Scioto River bridge as all trains must use the remaining bridge. It also creates a bit of a bottleneck from double to single and back.<br>

The western most stretch of single track also eliminated a set of diamonds to maintain across the B&O by the Chillicothe depot. The tax issue theory might have some merit as the start of single track at Omega is just into Pike County. West of Scioto, Kingston Hill becomes an operational issue which would have been a headache had it been single tracked. The double track section between Lunbeck and Scioto is obviously handy to pass trains but would have frequently been blocked back then had it not been double tracked due to N&W trains working Renick Yard with both B&O interchange traffic and Mead Paper traffic.<br>
