I won't say that they never exceeded the posted limit, but&nbsp;1943 RF&amp;P timetables show<br>
the maximum authorized speed&nbsp;for passenger &nbsp;trains was but 70 MPH.&nbsp; &nbsp;In addition to<br>
poor counterbalancing of the R-1s, ACL's main&nbsp;track was laid in 100# rail, most rolled<br>
by Southern Coal &amp; Iron in the 1920's.&nbsp; There was many a fissure in Southern<br>
rail.&nbsp;&nbsp;ACL mounted cameras on the R-1s and filmed&nbsp; the drivers pounding the rail.<br>
John Rehor, N&amp;W Safety Agent, once noted that every railroad specialized in it's<br>
own method of disaster.&nbsp; On the NKP, it was rear-enders.&nbsp;&nbsp;On the ACL, it most certainly<br>
would have been broken rail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Poor counterbalancing and Southern rail led to many<br>
&nbsp;a fatality on&nbsp;ACL - 73&nbsp; dead near Pembroke, NC initially caused by a broken rail, but<br>
resulting in a side collision because the fireman failed to flag&nbsp; traffic&nbsp; on the adjacent track.<br>
