<DIV><FONT size=4>Gordon this is very interesting rumor. If my history is
correct the Norfolk Southern (original) sucessor to Norfolk and Southern wound
up in the Southern fold. Do you have any more history on this? Cal

<DIV align=center><STRONG>Rumored That Norfolk and Western Will Purchase
Norfolk and Southern</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left> The report that the Norfolk and Western
railroad is expected to purchase the Norfolk and Southern, is received in
the general office at Roanoke with considerable incredulity. If
the report is true, it certainly has not originated in Roanoke.
Norfolk and Western people are inclined to regard the rumor as altogether
baseless. They are unable to comprehend how their road would be
benefited by such a deal.</DIV>
<DIV align=left> The signing of the ancillary order by
Judge H. G. Conner, of the Eastern Carolina United States district court for
the foreclosure sale of the Norfolk and Southern railroad, in the hands of
receivers, has given renewed impetus to talk that the Norfolk and Western
with principal North Carolina holdings, the Atlantic and North Carolina, and
the Raleigh and Pamlico Sound roads, will pass into the hands of the Norfolk
and Western. It is pointed out that under the North Carolina laws
neither the Southern nor the Seaboard Air Line could be a bidder, and the
Atlantic Coast Line would scarcely be a bidder. On the other hand, it
is claimed that there are a number of reasons, it is claimed, why the
Norfolk and Western would want this property. By constructing a link
from Raleigh to Durham, these rumor manipulators say, a new through line
outlet for the Norfolk and Western coal traffic would be established,
covering a large part of eastern Carolina that would otherwise be invaded by
the Seaboard Air Line and Clinchfield road, a coal carrying combination just
looming up as one of the great coal combinations of the country.</DIV>
