Eight Bents of Bridge and Thirty-five Cars Leave the Track</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV align=center>------</DIV>
<DIV align=center><STRONG>GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT GOES TO SCENE TO
INVESTIGATE</STRONG></DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left> An accident occurred on the Scioto
Division of the Norfolk and Western yesterday morning at 8:30 near Peebles,
Ohio, which resulted in the instant death of J. D. Norton, a brakeman
residing in Bluefield and the wrecking of 35 cars.</DIV>
<DIV align=left> The definite cause of the wreck has not
been stated by the local officials of the company, but the matter is under
investigation. For some reason or other the train, which was a
southbound freight, jumped the track on a bridge over a small stream,
tearing down eight bents of the bridge and badly wrecking the cars.</DIV>
<DIV align=left> General Superintendent George P. Johnston
left at noon yesterday on a special train to investigate the trouble and
take charge of repairing the damage.</DIV>
<DIV align=left> Mr. Norton was a married man, twenty-nine
years old, and the son of J. D. Norton who was killed a few weeks ago at the
Norfolk and Western passenger station while attempting to alight from a
moving train. The remains will be brought to Bluefield for
burial.</DIV>
<DIV align=left> According to the reports received at the
local division office no one else was injured. The damage to the
bridge and the rolling stock, however, was considerable, and it will take
some time to complete the repairs. The telegraph wires were torn down
on the bridge, and only a meager report of the wreck was received yesterday
morning. This did not indicate that so much damage was done.
Later reports gave fuller details. Peebles is a small place thirty-six
miles north of Portsmouth, Ohio.</DIV>
