Norfolk and Western Safeguard Against Wrecks</FONT></STRONG></DIV>

<DIV align=left><FONT face="Times New Roman"> The Norfolk and
Western has the automatic signals for movements of trains completed and in
operation from Roanoke to Christiansburg. The signals are about a mile
apart and when a train passes a signal it is automatically thrown to danger and
remains in that position until the train passes the next signal ahead when the
first signal again goes back to "clear track."</FONT></DIV>
<DIV align=left><FONT face="Times New Roman"> The normal
position of the devices signal "clear" and they stand at danger only when the
block is occupied by a train. When a train fiends a signal at danger it
must come to a stop and then proceed carefully looking out for a train
ahead.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV align=left><FONT face="Times New Roman"> The trainmen are
very much pleased with the signals. Telegraph operators are rapidly being
displaced by the "iron operators."</FONT></DIV>
